I went in feeling like I could trace the general origin of the slasher genre, but I learned a ton! Most of the films you mention I know culturally without ever watching, which speaks to the fraidy cat I was as a teen. Scream remains my favorite in the genre, but I have to think that is a self-aware homage as much as an authentic entry. In any event, thinking about Myers and Vorhees isn’t maybe the smartest move before turning out my lights for the night, but I enjoyed this. (I really liked the WWE line, by the way.)
Scream is definitely my favorite, too! I cut my hair a year ago to match Drew’s bob. I’m writing more about that film specifically next week, so hopefully I do it justice. I’m glad you noticed and liked the WWE line—I’ve recently developed an incurable obsession with the dark history of wrestling and it has consumed me, body and soul haha. I’ll definitely be writing about that at some point, too.
It’s not a horror film (although I would say it’s scary in a way), but the 2023 film The Iron Claw starring Zach Efron is a great look at those old scary wrestling days when tragedy was an expected part (for so many reasons). I’d highly recommend it, albeit with a gentle warning to have tissues handy.
Yes I know about that one!! I haven’t seen it yet, but I went down the rabbit hole of the Von Erichs a couple of weeks ago, so it’s definitely on my list. I believe it’s an A24 film, but either way I’d still count that as a horror purely based on the content and psychological effects. That story is depressing for many reasons but the fact that is true makes it worse.
Yep, that’s the family. I went in not knowing the length of the tragedy they endured; there were two scenes where I actually got that horror movie stomach knot as it dawned on me what was happening.
